New Student Orientation staff positions are now paid.
The applications went out Sept. 21 and are due at 8 a.m. Oct. 19. They are available to complete and turn in through OrgSync.
The staff will receive a $400 salary in September 2016 for the work they do during the summer and Stars Week 2016. Last year’s staff received payment, but they were not aware of the compensation when they applied for their positions.
New Student Orientation leaders are nonpaid volunteer positions. They are placed in committees coordinated by staff. The application for leaders goes out Nov. 1 and is due Dec. 19.
Colbi Beam, coordinator of first-year experience, encourages everyone to apply.
NSO is looking for students who love OCU and are passionate about helping new students, Beam said.
“They are the frontline for new students,” Beam said. “They are the first people new students meet at Stars 101 and Stars Week.”
We hope to make the team diverse in ethnicity, major, year, culture, and personality, Beam said.
All that is required is to fill out the online application and attend an interview process, assisted by the staff and hosted in groups of three to five applicants.
Orientation leaders are responsible for planning several Stars Week events including Blue Out Blow Out, Stars on Bricktown, Live! on the Quad and OKConnect.
Beam said she wants students to realize that there is a time commitment involved with applying. Leaders and staff are required to attend all four Stars 101 sessions and Stars Week events.
“We are willing to be flexible on some things, but some things we are not,” Beam said.
New students like having upperclassmen showing them around during thier first week.
“The New Student Orientation Leaders were very kind upon my arrival to OCU,” said Emily Nelson, vocal performance freshman. “I was very inspired by their drive and enthusiasm. I felt that’s something I’d like to be a part of.”
