The men’s basketball team is starting its season without a coach.
Head Coach Dionne Phelps announced Oct. 7 that he was leaving to be the assistant coach at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. Oct. 9 was his last day.
“The timing is very poor,” Athletic Director Jim Abbott said. “I’m upset for the team to have to go through this change just a month before the first game.”
Officials are searching for a new coach and already have a few candidates, Abbott said. Abbott refused to give those candidates’ names.
Practices for the season start Oct. 12 and a temporary assistant coach will lead the practices until a new coach is hired. The team doesn’t have a full-time assistant coach because of budget cuts a couple years ago, Abbott said.
