Mad Max: Fury Road 10/10
There’s something to be said about a movie that is so intense it will cause you to jump up from your seat in the theater in excitement, spilling whatever candy you happened to have on your lap at the time and then not caring because what you just saw was so amazing that it makes up for it.
That, in a nutshell, is Mad Max: Fury Road.
Written and directed by George Miller, the mastermind behind all of the Mad Max films that originally starred Mel Gibson in his younger, less crazy years, Fury Road is intended to be both a sequel and reboot of the franchise. The new Max is played by Tom Hardy, who spends most of the movie grunting his responses to everyone. When Hardy takes on a role in an action movie, he usually plays an authentic, animalistic character (such as Bane or his character from Warrior), and that adds to the believability of the crazy intense scenes in Fury Road.
While Hardy may play the titular character, the movie truly belongs to Charlize Theron’s character Imperator Furiousa, who may be one the strongest and coolest female characters in recent memory. This film has been praised for its strong message of female empowerment and rightfully so. Girl power has never looked this cool.
Some viewers may have problems getting over the simple plot, which is a legitimate gripe. The entire movie could be completely summed up in a sentence if someone was inclined to do so, but this is one of the rare films that gets away with it. You don’t need a complicated storyline with action this good. The film is also shot beautifully, making its desert setting seem less bleak, especially at night.
If you’re ready to turn off your brain and get lost in a world that includes breathtaking (and mostly practical!) stunts, the most evil looking bad guy ever, and a shredding guitar player that WILL become your favorite character, then check out Mad Max: Fury Road.
