Student Government Association has begun preparation for another year, focusing their attention on restructuring the organization.
“The prioritization report asked that we undergo a strategic planning process to make sure the organization is keeping with a new student body,” SGA President Chance Johnson said. “We intend to streamline SGA and make it better able to serve the needs of our students.”
Along with the restructuring process, SGA’s goals include working with housing and facilities to address maintenance concerns, as well as upgrading the fitness center on campus. They also are looking to resolve some logistical problems with the Stars Advantage Program, where area businesses and restaurants offer discounts to OCU students.
Like many departments across campus, SGA also received a reduction in their annual budget. These cuts will cause certain programs to be phased out, and the number of paid positions will decrease.
But voluntary membership still is strongly encouraged. A number of opportunities to join all four branches will be available in the coming weeks.
SGA officials will send out notifications via email once school begins.
“This year will be one of the most impactful years from SGA,” said Brandon Doyle, acting sophomore and member of student activities council.
There are three seats open on student court, five seats open in Student Senate. Student Activities Council also is accepting applications.
Students interested in joining the organization before the announcement, can visit Johnson, Nic Rhodes, vice president for Student Senate, or MaryAnn Grover, vice president for student activities, in the SGA office in Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center.
