A new event centered on exploring Oklahoma City was introduced during this year’s Stars Week.
OKConnect gave freshmen the opportunity to choose from five different trips around Oklahoma City via a campus shuttle.
The trips included:
– the Devon Boathouse, 275 S. Lincoln Blvd., and Empire Slice House, 1734 N.W. 16th St.,
– Devon Energy Center, 333 W. Sheridan Ave., and S&B’s Burger Joint, 20 N.W. 9th St.,
– Oklahoma Memorial Museum, 620 N. Harvey Ave., and Kaiser’s Diner, 1039 N. Walker Ave.,
– Science Museum of Oklahoma, 2100 NE. 52nd St., and Pizza 23, 600 N.W. 23rd St., or
– Oklahoma Museum of Art, 415 Couch Drive, and Tucker’s Onion Burgers, 324 N.W. 23rd St.
OKConnect replaced the Involved Fair due to a lack of participation.
“We have changed Campus Connect by expanding it to the entire student body and moving it back a few weeks,” said Colbi Beam, coordinator of first-year experience. “This is now called Live! On the Quad and there will be live music and food.”
Live! will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 3 on the quad.
Other previous events continued as in the past.
“My predecessors have done an amazing job at creating an orientation week that facilitates community building and teaching our students the essentials before school starts,” Beam said. “Why fix something that isn’t broken?”
OCU welcomed more than 300 new students this year, more than an eight percent increase from last year.
The events are facilitated by New Student Orientation Leaders, upperclassmen who volunteer to help welcome the incoming class to OCU.
“I’m really excited to be here at OCU,” said Shyanne Tate, nursing freshman. “Stars week was an awesome experience to meet new friends and get me ready for the first semester.”
