A new method of communication has appeared outside the caf.
The scrolling marquee sign was placed outside of the caf by the Student Government Association, which bought the sign this spring for $3,060. Student Senate approved the sign and included the expense for it in the Spring 2015 budget.
The sign will be used to notify visitors to the caf of home games for OCU sports and to inform students of events around campus, said Beatrize Martinez, former SGA president.
“It will help broadcast student engagement opportunities,” Martinez said.
The screen is programmable and users can change the messages as often as they wish. LaVetra Ray, assistant director of student life, and Rich Tortorelli, director of athletic communications, along with SGA members will be able to change the messages. The new users are training this week.
“The device is not yet in use, but will hopefully be in the next week or so,” Martinez said. “We are waiting on the users to get their training.”
Some students are concerned about the sign.
“I’m not sure it’s the best use of money,” said Elizabeth McCreight, acting senior. “It also seems kind of gimmicky. We already have a lot of avenues of information for on campus events via the Internet. The sign seems a bit redundant.”
