The search for the new vice president for student affairs and dean of students is complete.
Dr. Amy Ayres was selected and will assume the position July 1.
“I wish her the best,” said Dr. Liz Donnelly, acting vice president for student affairs and dean of students, who also applied for the position. “If she ever needs me, I am always here for her.”
Ayres grew up in Pauls Valley, Okla., just 30 minutes south of Oklahoma City. She is the senior director of involvement and engagement at the University of Texas in Arlington. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma, and a master’s degree in education and a doctorate of higher education from the University of North Texas in Denton.
“I hope to bring a fresh perspective to the campus,” Ayres said. “I have a passion for student affairs, and I saw an opportunity to grow and help this campus grow as well.”
Ayres said she chose to come to OCU because she is a native Oklahoman and the thought of coming home was appealing to her.
“To be able to do what I love close to home is wonderful,” Ayres said. “I’ve lived in Texas for 20 years and to come home is great. Also the close knit community was very attractive as well, everyone is there to help if you need it.”
The job of vice president for student affairs was posted Oct. 13, 2014, following Dr. Rick Hall’s retirement. The committee, made up of nine members including two students, started reviewing applications in January.
“It was a rigorous process. I think that it was healthy for the campus,” Donnelly said. “I am glad that they did a thorough national search, and I believe that they have found the right person.”
Students were able to meet the three candidates and ask them questions during designated times last month. After the meetings, participants were sent an email for feedback about the candidates.
“Dr. Ayres will provide strategic leadership and oversight for the division of student affairs while focusing on initiatives that will enhance our students’ educational experience,” President Robert Henry wrote in an email sent to the campus Monday.
Donnelly will continue to serve as acting vice president for student affairs and dean of students until Ayres officially starts.
Donnelly then will assume a leadership role in the university housing office, according to the email.
Jason Foremen, professor of theater and chairman of the hiring committee, and Henry were unavailable for comment at presstime.
