The women of Alpha Chi Omega are preparing for their Sexual Assault Awareness event.
Throughout the week they will post on social media about sexual assault and domestic violence awareness.
“We’re trying to embrace April in the sense of it being Sexual Assault Awareness Month,” said Nicole Wilwert, dance pedagogy junior and Alpha Chi Omega president.
Alpha Chi Omega will raise money for the Oklahoma City YWCA, whose mantra is to eliminate racism and empower women. They provide safe places for women and girls who have been victims of sexual assault or domestic violence, according to ywcaokc.org.
“Sexual assault awareness is important because it’s something that you can’t make better with a fundraiser,” said Lyric Crisler, early childhood education freshman. “The only way to stop sexual assault is to spread the word about it and educate people so that it happens less and less often.”
Since there will be other events by different organizations that week, Alpha Chi Omega is only hosting one this year, Wilwert said.
They are altering their popular pie event, “Have a Pie with Alpha Chi,” and expanding it to “Sugar High with Alpha Chi.”
“It’s like ‘Have a Pie’ but with more options, not just pie,” Wilwert said. “But obviously pie will still definitely be there.”
Willie, the caf grill employee, will be making pies and other desserts for the event.
Sugar High with Alpha Chi is from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. April 24 at the Alpha Chi Omega house.
“My favorite thing is being able to show to the campus the passion that my sisters have for this philanthropy,” Wilwert said. “It’s a hard thing to actually talk about, so do everything you can to support sexual assault awareness. Educate and be educated.”
