Star Wars and Shakespeare are an unlikely combination, but students will get the chance to see both in the next OCU Edge production.
William Shakespeare’s The Empire Striketh Back is a play written by Ian Doescher. The show is actually the script of the second movie in the Star Wars trilogy re-written in the same style and form that Shakespeare wrote his plays.
“It’s really going to be a lot of fun,” said Brett Holleman, acting junior and director of the play. “The assistant director of the show, Lauren Thompson, pointed the play out to me at a bookstore in Oxford, England last summer. I submitted the show to be considered for the OCU Edge season while I was still in England.”
The cast began working on the show March 22.
OCU Edge is the name of the staged reading series in Theater OCU. OCU Edge productions are only allowed three rehearsals and will have their final rehearsal before the show.
There are typically six shows every season, which are submitted by students. They are student directed to give young directors an opportunity to work with material that they selected.
“Something I’ve very much loved about this show is how everyone seems to have a very good attitude centered around playing, having fun,” said Trevor Strahan, acting junior who plays “Han Solo.”
“Believe it or not the script is a bit of a mountain to face, just when it comes to the sheer amount of text we all have speak, so it’s nice that everyone in the process is willing to play and have a great time.”
The show is one night only at 8 p.m. April 19 on the fourth floor of the Clara E. Jones Administration Building. Admission is free.
