As the school year comes to a close, it’s time for freshmen to reflect on their first year college experiences with the annual Fire and Water Ceremony.
OCULeads hosts the ceremony every year to commemorate the end of the year for each new freshmen class. OCULeads was created in 2011 for students who showed leadership potential when they were in high school. The students meet weekly to plan campus events and to meet with distinguished guest speakers.
“The students plan and run the event,” said Lesley Black, assistant dean of students. “This is a great opportunity for our rising sophomores to celebrate their year and look back on everything they accomplished. It is a rite of passage and a vow to come back even stronger next year.”
The event is at 5:30 p.m. April 22 in the Great Hall in Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center. The entire class of 2018 is invited to attend together one last time as a freshmen class. Students dress up for the event and will be treated to a dinner as they listen to a keynote speaker. The speaker for this year’s ceremony is Tanner Bradshaw, acting senior.
“I really liked Fire and Water last year,” said Noelle Bradley, dance management sophomore. “It was really nice to end the year with our entire freshmen class. I liked looking back and seeing how far we had come.”
Students wanting pictures of their year to be incorporated into the Fire and Water Slideshow during the ceremony can upload them onto the Fire and Water 2015 Facebook group.
