The men of Phi Gamma Delta have secured their chapter and are officially the Omicorn Chi chapter.
After nearly six years of being on campus, Fiji received their charter from their headquarters on March 28.
“It feels good,” said Jacob Overling, president of Fiji. “It feels different than other fraternities on campus. They have their place, they were set. With us, we had to achieve these goals and be like them.”
The men hosted their first ever Frank Norris Pig Dinner and invited other fraternity and sorority members to join them as they celebrated.
The Pig Dinner is sanctioned by the International Fraternity and serves as a way for undergraduate brothers to welcome their graduate brothers into their chapters.
The tradition is the longest running, chapter-based, annual graduate event in all fraternities and sororities, according to Fiji’s website, phigam.org.
“The campus already saw us as a fraternity,” Overling said. “Before they would say that ‘we have three Greek men’s organizations,’ but now they can say we have ‘three Greek fraternities on campus.’”
To obtain their charter, the men had to show their headquarters that they can sustain consistent numbers and recruit every year, support their two philanthropies, have a good grade point average each year, and show that they are supportive of other philanthropies as well.
“We completed our check list, sent in our petition, and then waited to see what would happen,” Overling said.
After they sent in their petition, the Arcons, which is the governing body of the fraternity, reviews it and then petition is sent to the all the other chapters across the nation to be voted on, Overling said.
Fiji hosts two philanthropy event every year.
A United Service Organizations week in the fall semester and then a Red Cross week in the spring.
Overling said some of their goals for the Fall 2015 semester is to adopt a local philanthropy, as well as boost pledge numbers during Fall Rush and start looking into raising money to get a house for their chapter.
“I know that my brothers are excited and ready to start this new journey,” Overling said.
