Sophomore wrestler Cody Pfau became the outstanding wrestler of the Women’s USA Wrestling University Nationals.
Pfau pinned defending champion Erin Golston of the New York Athletic Club in 1:58 to capture the 105-pound championship. Eight Stars placed in the tournament.
Those OCU individuals who took second at their respective weights were Kayla Aggio at 152 pounds, Shelby Morrison at 116 and Rachel McFarland at 132. Rachel Archer at 116 and Carla Ponce at 128 picked up third place.
The Stars’ Cassidy Jasperson reeled in fourth at 121 pounds, while Natalia Hinojo at 132 and Rachel Young at 139 grabbed fifth place.
Pfau used a spladle to finish off Golston in the 105-pound title match.
“I just keep going forward and taking my shots,” Pfau said. “Sometimes I get caught underneath, but if I keep going forward and being aggressive, I end up on top.”
Pfau, the 109-pound Women’s College Wrestling Association champion, is set to compete in the World Team Trials on June 12-14 in Madison, Wis.; the Junior Pan American Games on July 10-26 in Toronto and Junior World Championships in Sept. 7-12 in Las Vegas.
“It’s an outstanding achievement,” Coach Archie Randall said. “She’s really wrestling well. It was amazing.”
