Spending Spring Break in OKC? You’re just in luck because this weekend kicks off one of the most fun-filled holidays of the year. Time to get out your brightest green attire and embrace your inner Irish as Oklahoma City celebrates Saint Patrick’s Day. The festivities begin this Saturday with the 31st annual Saint Patrick’s Day parade stepping off at 11:00 am from Reno and Hudson. The very first parade had merely 20 entries, but over the years that number has grown to an average of 80, making it Oklahoma City’s largest annual parade. At least 5,000 people are expected to line the streets of downtown to enjoy this celebration.
Staring at noon is the Bricktown Saint Patrick’s Day Block Party. Admission is free. The party lasts until midnight and features green beer, beads, hats, t-shirts, and live music. Appearing on the Chevy Stage this year are Timothy O’Brien and the Celtic Cheer, Dino and Friends, Attica State, Empire Grey, and Nicnos.
On Tuesday, the official holiday, McNellie’s will open at 10:00 am and Saints will be open at 11:00 am. Each Irish pub will remain open all day in celebration of this festive day. Beginning at noon on the Water Stage at the Myriad Gardens, are performances from the Oklahoma Academy of Irish Dance and Pierce Hart Celtic Band. There are also activities for children including making a St. Patrick’s Day container for planting clover seeds and a history lesson about the Irish potato.
Irish heritage has a presence in Oklahoma City and what better way to explore and support this heritage than through the celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day. So if you’re in town this coming week, take advantage of these opportunities to experience and enjoy Irish culture.
