Sunsinee Parker, mass communications senior, won a statewide video contest.
Parker entered Keep Oklahoma Beautiful’s End Litter Video Contest in November as an assignment for her nonlinear editing class.
Keep Oklahoma Beautiful is a nonprofit organization that used this contest for high school and college students to create PSAs about the littering and illegal dumping problem in Oklahoma.
“At first my literal words to [Andy Gibson] were ‘I won’t win, but I’ll enter,’” Parker said.
Parker spent about six hours on her video titled Do Your Part. She spent three hours filming and three hours on editing and doing her voice overs.
“She put a lot of work into that,” said Andy Gibson, artist in residence of mass communications. “I think the best thing about her PSA is the voice over. Her voice is really solid and I think she could go out and do voice over work right away because she has a really nice voice for that kind of thing.”
Parker said she was in disbelief when she found out she was a finalist.
“I didn’t have the confidence in my own piece to think someone would look at it like that,” Parker said. “It taught me the lesson to have the confidence in my own skills.”
Veronica Wisneiwski, mass communications senior, was also a finalist in the contest.
“I love that we both were able to represent OCU,” Parker said. “I was very proud of that, and I was very proud of her. She had a really good piece.”
Wisneiwski said she thinks Parker’s win was well deserved.
“It’s by far the best anti-littering video for Keep Oklahoma Beautiful,” Wisneiwski said. “I’m glad a Star brought home the award and the cash.”
Judges chose the finalists, but online voting was done to pick the winning videos. Parker ended the contest with 324 votes, which was the most in the college division.
The campus was informed of Parker’s win around 5 p.m. Feb. 18 by a Blue Notes email.
Parker won a $750 cash prize for winning the contest, but she is unsure of what she plans to do with the money.
“One thing that was really close to my heart because a lot of people did rally for me, I plan on donating $75 back to Keep Oklahoma Beautiful on behalf of everyone that voted for me to say thank you,” Parker said. “I can’t buy everybody donuts, and I know it’s going to a good cause.”
Parker plans to take the summer after she graduates off, then to continue in the mass communications field.
