The men’s basketball team wins against Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 82-78 on Feb. 26 at the Sheaffer Center in a clash of top 25-ranked teams in NAIA Division I men’s basketball.
Senior Gary Inglett hooped free throws with five seconds left for the final margin. The 23rd-ranked Stars moved into a tie for second place in the Sooner Athletic Conference at 16-7, 12-5 SAC. No. 24 SAGU went to 20-9, 10-7 SAC.
Senior Tharone Chilton led the Stars with 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals, while junior Evan White posted 15 points and three 3-pointers for the Stars.
Inglett provided OCU with 14 points and 13 rebounds for his league-high 11th double-double, and senior R.J. McGhee added 11 points and five rebounds.
The Stars overcame an eight-point deficit to stretch its win streak to four games and complete a season sweep of Southwestern Assemblies.
“I’m very proud of our guys for remaining composed while facing adversity,” Coach Dionne Phelps said. “This was a very big step for us. We’re very fortunate to come out of this one on top.”
Jonathan Walter scored in the lane to give Southwestern Assemblies a 69-61 lead with 7:41 left in the game. OCU tallied the game’s next six points as McGhee had free throws, Dema Sane stuck a putback and Inglett added a tip-in of his own.
Inglett’s jumper in the paint put OCU up 74-73 at the 4:26 mark, then Rishaad Alexander added a bucket to take back the lead for Southwestern Assemblies 75-74. McGhee responded with a layup, then Sane had a lay-in to produce a 78-75 Stars edge with 2:47 showing.
The Stars led 80-76 on Ingett’s foul shots with 19 seconds left. Walter missed a pair of free throws that could have tied the game with five seconds to go.
OCU finishes the regular season at 5 p.m. Feb. 28 against John Brown (Ark.) at Abe Lemons Arena.
