Counseling services is hosting a interpersonal group to help students develop healthier relationships with themselves and others.
The interpersonal group, started by Lori Finley, master level intern for the counseling center, will meet from 12 to 1 p.m. every Friday, except during Spring Break, until April 3 in the counseling offices in Walker Hall dormitory. The first meeting of the group was Feb. 13.
Students are encouraged to attend any and all sessions, regardless of previous attendance.
Lunch will be provided by the counseling center during the last session on April 3, but until then, students are welcome to bring their own lunch.
“The majority of our clients in the past few semesters have struggled with depression, anxiety and lack of lasting friendships,” said Lori Finely, the interpersonal group leader. “The other counselors and I think these students could greatly benefit by learning these skills in a group setting.”
Each session will explore new methods of developing interpersonal skills, such as expression of emotion, understanding of social dynamics and awareness of one’s self.
Quizzes and exercises help each attendee discover their style of communication.
From there, the group members will learn about their personal style, how to use the beneficial skills that result from that form of communication, and how to relate to people that communicate differently.
The group also will examine unhealthy versus healthy relationships, in an attempt to form the latter.
“One of the best skill sets that someone could have is an ability to effectively interact interpersonally,” said Amanda Foley, psychology freshman. “Knowledge of communication methods help us empathize with others and develop relationships that lead to success and a sense of belonging.”
Two students attended the first session.
No registration is required to attend future sessions, but the counselors have capped the group at eight students.
