Alvin’s Café started a new tradition toward the end of the fall 2014 semester, adding the weekly special.
The specials are meant to offer a new home-cooked addition to the menu for the week. Prices of the weekly specials vary with each dish.
“I just decided we needed to offer something different,” said Ben Strealy, retail manager. “Although the menu is good, it’s good to have change, and it gives the cooks some freedom.”
Previous dishes included a pulled pork sandwich, barbecue pizza, supreme pizza, chicken pesto roasted tomato sandwich, and, according to Strealy, the popular Balboa chicken sandwich.
“I eat them all the time,” said Brandon Elder, acting freshman. “They might be expensive, but it’s worth it.”
Not all of the weekly specials are healthier than regular menu items, but officials are working to offer some healthier weekly specials, like new wraps.
About half of the weekly specials are items students wanted, like the fajita chicken nachos. Students who want a specific dish, or have a special request, can speak with the staff behind the counter.
“If anybody wants to make a suggestion, were open to it,” Strealy said.
