Evensong will bring in guest speakers this semester to give a different voice to the community.
The Rev. Rodney Newman, director of religious life, has scheduled three guest speakers to preach at Evensong this semester. The speakers are: Hannah Lampi, religion junior; Michael Horn, youth ministry junior, and Lori Walke, associate pastor at Mayflower United Church of Christ in Oklahoma City.
Other speakers may be added during the semester.
Lampi was scheduled to speak Feb. 16, but the service was canceled due to inclement weather. An alternate date for Lampi to speak had not been determined at presstime.
Walke is scheduled to speak Feb. 23, and Horn is scheduled for April 13.
The speakers’ topics are undefined, the Rev. Newman said, but Walke will speak during Kappa Phi Christian sorority’s Beauty Week. She will speak about the meaning of true beauty. Newman will follow up by using the next three Evensongs to speak about true love on March 2, true peace on March 9 and true hope on March 23.
There will be no Evensong the week of Spring Break.
Newman said he thinks guest speakers are important for the services.
“It’s important to give a different voice to the community,” Newman said. “But there is value in a consistent voice, which is why I speak most weeks.”
Horn agreed that having a variety of speakers is important.
“A guest speaker is good to have every once in a while to bring a variety of thoughts and beliefs to a common place of worship,” he said.
Horn said he isn’t sure what he will speak about, but he is excited to speak.
“I think Evensong is a great way for people to go worship here on campus in a friendly environment,” Horn said. “I am glad that I have been blessed to go and speak to such a great crowd.”
Evensong is at 8:30 p.m. every Monday in Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel. Students can arrive late or leave early if they would like to attend but cannot attend the entire event. Free pizza is offered before and after the service.
