A student now offers free group yoga sessions to everyone on campus.
Rayne Sofley, acting sophomore, leads the group’s sessions, from 8 to 9 a.m. every day in different locations around campus. Sofley announces locations and other information about the sessions on a Facebook page titled Yoga OCU.
Yoga is a form of meditation practiced by maintaining specific body postures and controlling one’s breath. The practice originated in ancient India and is a part of Hindu culture.
Sofley chose to offer public yoga sessions to help other students find time to relieve stress while keeping herself accountable to practicing yoga.
“Yoga was a good way for me to get connected to myself and figure out what I really wanted from life,” Sofley said. “So I thought that a lot of students could really utilize that.”
Yoga courses taught by a professional instructor are offered for credit at OCU.
Natalia Callard, adjunct professor of exercise science and certified yoga teacher, said yoga is great for staying healthy.
Students who participate in the sessions enjoy Sofley’s instruction and the opportunity to practice yoga free of charge. Julia Waits, acting sophomore, is a regular participant in the yoga group.
“I think Rayne does a good job,” Waits said. “You can tell she’s practiced.”
The group is overseen by Sofley and is not an official campus organization.
Sessions will be offered the entire semester with the schedule subject to change based on Sofley’s schedule.
The sessions are open to anyone who wishes to attend.
