Theater students can be seen in the upcoming production for children.
The Oklahoma Children’s Theatre, which is located on campus, is in rehearsal for The Cat in the Hat, based on the book by Dr. Seuss.
The show will be almost identical to the famous children’s book. The adaptation by Katie Mitchell has no added or changed words from the original story to ensure children who have read the book can follow it.
“It’s easy to follow for everyone,” said Elizabeth McCreight, acting senior.
McCreight plays “The Fish” in the show, and uses a puppet to portray the fish in the fishbowl.
McCreight said the rehearsal process fosters a fun and fulfilling show.
“The process has been really fun,” McCreight said. “It’s a very laid back atmosphere with people who are great to work with.”
The Oklahoma Children’s Theatre works with the School of Theater for several productions a year. The organization will partner with the theater school this semester to produce Jackie and Me, a show about a child who travels in time to meet Jackie Robinson. Other co-productions included A Christmas Carol and Treasure Island.
Roy Samra, acting senior, has been involved in two past children’s theater shows, including The Twits, which traveled to local elementary schools.
“I honestly love it because you get to play with next to no limits on stage, and children don’t sit and criticize your performance,” Samra said. “As long as you’re having fun up there performing, they’re probably having the time of their lives.”
While the show is designed to appeal to children, audience members of every age are welcome.
“Kids love it because it is silly and visually exciting, and college kids love it for those reason plus our own nostalgia for our childhoods,” McCreight said.
The show runs for 18 performances starting Monday until March 6 in the Children’s Center for the Arts, on campus.
Tickets are $8 for students with a valid student ID. Tickets can be purchased at oklahomachildrenstheatre.org or by calling 405-951-0011.
