In the campus, Feb. 4, we ran our editorial about our thoughts on the Oklahoma hoodie law and I guess someone was paying attention because the proposed amendment to the law no longer exists.
Here’s our original opinion on the law, but to read more about why the proposal no longer exists visit NewsOK.
There has been a lot of talk about the “hoodie law” in Oklahoma. There is also talk about how it is not what everyone makes it out to be.
Local and national news agencies have been reporting on the legislation that would ban the wearing of hoodies in Oklahoma. This immediately can strike fear in college students all over the state. Some of us live almost exclusively in hoodies, especially those of us who are in greek life, where a part of the process is receiving a hoodie.
According to Vocative.com, the law is not what you think. To read more, visit their article.
The proposed amendment would make it illegal to intentionally wear a hood or mask to conceal your identity in public.
It is important for lawmakers to make sure the new amendment is specific and clear for citizens. As college students, it should not be illegal for us to wear a hood with our school emblem or greek letters on the front.
It is important for students to recognize the law is designed to keep people safe and make sure it is easy to recognize offenders and criminals. We should not have to deal with the stigma of a sweatshirt.
It is easy to understand why it would be ideal to ban masks and full face coverings, but it is not as easy to understand why people are trying to make our clothing illegal.
