The women’s wrestling team took runner-up in the NWCA National Duals as King (Tenn.) won the championship dual 24-17 on Saturday at the Fort Wayne Convention Center.
The Stars came in second place in the dual tournament for the second time in three years. The Stars, ranked second in the Women’s College Wrestling Association, went to 19-3 in duals this season. OCU has won NWCA National Duals championships in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
The Stars led 9-1 after Emily Webster won 13-2 over Marina Doi at 101 pounds, then Cody Pfau pinned Breonnah Neal in 1:42 at 109. Top-ranked King won the next five matches to grab a 19-11 lead.
The Stars finished with victories in two of the dual’s final three matches. Demi Strub defeated Lorrie-Ann Ramos 8-4 in the 155-pound match, while Heather O’Connor prevailed 8-0 over Jackie Williams in the 191-pound bout.
Webster improved to 115-0 against collegiate wrestlers in her OCU career.
OCU prevailed 29-16 over fifth-ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) in the tournament semifinals. Pfau, Strub, Kayla Aggio and Shelby Morrison notched falls to lead the Stars.
Oklahoma City led 17-1 after Rachel Archer’s 9-2 victory at 123 pounds.
The Stars compete next in the Ottawa Braves Open at 9 a.m. Jan. 18 in Ottawa, Kan.
