The women’s wrestling team advanced in the NWCA National Duals with a 33-11 quarterfinal victory over Wayland Baptist on Friday at the Fort Wayne Convention Center.
The Stars, ranked second in the Women’s College Wrestling Association, moved to 18-2 with the victory over seventh-ranked Wayland Baptist.
The Stars advanced to a semifinal dual 9 a.m. Saturday against Campbellsville (Ky.). The championship dual will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Stars picked up five technical-fall wins. Senior Emily Webster started the dual off with a 12-2 win over Vanessa Smith. Webster, ranked No. 1 at 101 pounds, moved to 113-0 against college competition as a Star. Smith is ranked third at their weight.
Sophomore Cody Pfau added a 10-0 victory over Michele Guerrero at 109 pounds. Pfau holds the top spot, while Guerrero is the seventh-ranked 109-pounder.
Junior Shelby Morrison knocked off Jessica Von Behren 14-1 in the 116-pound bout.
The Stars built a 12-2 lead through three matches. Sophomore Natalia Hinojo blanked Jordan Smith 11-0 at 136. After OCU’s Rachel Young reeled in a forfeit, the Stars had a 25-6 advantage. At 155 pounds, junior Kayla Aggio rolled to an 11-1 victory over Rhina Lopez. Aggio checked in at second in the 143-pound rankings for the Stars. Heather O’Connor finished off the victory by winning 3-0 over Kierra Boyce. O’Connor is ranked No. 2 at 191.
