Junior wrestler Zach Skates captures the Midland Warrior Open on Saturday at Hopkins Arena.
Skates won his fourth tournament crown this season and eighth career open tournament title in three years at OCU. Six individuals placed in the tournament for the Stars, ranked 13th in NAIA wrestling.
Sophomore Derek Sivertsen finished runner-up at 184 pounds Saturday. OCU’s Aaron Guery took third at 149 pounds. The Stars’ individuals that retained fourth place were Parker Bohannan at 149 pounds, Aaron LaFarge at 133 and James Landoll at 141.
Skates picked up a forfeit win from Chase White of Nebraska-Kearney in the 157-pound championship match. Skates holds the seventh spot in the NAIA rankings at his weight. Skates advanced to the title bout with a 3-1 win over Tyler Nation of Augustana (S.D.). Skates also overwhelmed Gage Overton of Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) 18-2.
Sivertsen fell 6-5 to Sterling Terry of Midland (Neb.) in the 184-pound title bout. Sivertsen is ranked seventh in the NAIA among 184-pounders. Sivertsen rolled to a 10-2 win over Jon Solano of Dickinson State (N.D.) in the quarterfinals.
Oklahoma City takes on Central Baptist (Ark.) at 7 p.m. Jan. 13 in Conway, Ark.
