OCU has been named a Certified Healthy Campus by the Oklahoma State Department of Health. The program recognizes public and private colleges, universities, and career technology centers that “make a positive impact on the health of their students, employees and visitors.
The Certified Healthy Campus program began in 2011, in order to work on improving the health of Oklahomans by starting with college-age students.
The Healthy Campus website recognized the importance of habits made during the formative college years, stating “during their time on campuses, many young people begin their journey towards a career, learning hobbies, and developing friendships that may last for years or decades. The start of this journey provides a great opportunity to help people develop a lifelong culture of health.”
OCU achieved its merit certification by meeting several criteria that have been outlined by the American College Health Association Standards for Practice of Health Promotion in Higher Education.
These criteria include environmental sustainability efforts, volunteer and service learning opportunities, having a tobacco-free campus, safe and accessible walking paths, community gardens, drug, alcohol and mental health resources, exercise facilities, student health insurance, available CPR/AED training, and wellness programming.
Many departments on our campus provide these services. The accreditation recognized OCU’s Counseling Services, Campus Health, Human Resources, Recreation and Intramural Sports, Police, Risk Management, Facilities, and Academic Affairs.
In the interest of maintaining the programs recognized by the recognition, OCU has put in place a new email address where campus community members can send their ideas and feedback. Address comments, concerns, or feedback to ocuwellness@okcu.edu.
