The women’s basketball team moved to 6-1 with their win against Evangel University 81-52 Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Senior Rateska Brown scored 26 points for the Stars. Brown had six rebounds and five 3-pointers while shooting 10-for-12 from the field.
Senior Janay Borum had 17 points, four assists and three steals and hit 6 of her 8 shots from the floor.
Senior Ouleymatou Coulibaly posted her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and junior Catherine Kruschke had 12 points and three steals while sinking 5 of her 6 field-goal tries.
The Stars had Evangel to 35.8 percent shooting from the field for the lowest field-goal percentage by any opponent this season. The Stars downed 56.4 percent of its shots from the field.
“I have to give credit to everyone who played,” Coach Latricia Trammell said. “They contributed in a positive way running positions they haven’t ran before. To have that fight and that grit to find a way to win, I was really proud of them, and that’s what I told them after the game.”
The Stars led wire-to-wire, building its lead to 36 points late in the game. Brown’s free throw gave the Stars a 77-41 advantage and capped a 10-2 run with 5:31 remaining.
Borum gave the Stars the edge in the first period with 14 points. Borum had a 3-point play that put the Stars ahead 9-3 at the 15:02 mark of the first half.
The Stars pushed their lead into double digits using an 8-0 surge. Borum picked up another 3-point play and a jumper in the lane around Brown’s trey. They led 25-13 with 7:20 showing on the clock.
“We call her a little waterbug,” Trammell said. “She’s all over the place. She’s a great spark. She has found that she likes coming off the bench and seeing the game a little bit before she comes in. She’s the one that kept us going in the first half and getting us that lead we needed.”
The Stars take on Lubbock Christian University at 2 p.m. Jan. 1 in Lubbock, Texas.
