- Seth Boyden’s one-minute B.O.T., created as part of CalArts’ 48 Hour Film Festival, has a cute gimmick but doesn’t quite hit its mark. The short follows the story of a robot and an astronaut looking for life on an unnamed planet. While the animation could have benefited from additional time, any roughness can be excused by the constraints of the festival. However, the same cannot be said of the story, which feels slipshod and unoriginal. See the short here.
- Another CalArts festival entry is Puppy Love, a one-minute film by Nadya Mira. It’s both sweet and sad, and the ending is thoroughly unexpected. What’s more, the animation, while slightly strange, has a captivating quality. Take a look at the short here.
- Péter Vácz’s one-minute Satellite Dish combines childlike animation, a nonsensical poem, and a Hungarian rap star. It’s exactly as surreal as it sounds. There’s not much to it in terms of plot or characters or any kind of structure at all, but it’s certainly a fun way to spend a minute. Watch it here.
