The OCU Center for University-Church Relations has reminded the campus community that Tuesday, Dec. 2 is “Giving Tuesday.”
In an email to the campus community, the Reverend Dr. Charles Neff anounced the day as an “opportunity to go beyond the self-satisfaction of Black Friday, Shop Local Saturday, and Cyber Monday and give in a way that can really make a difference in the life others.”
Neff encouraged the campus to donate to any philanthropic organizations, including the United Methodist missions in the city and around the world.
Giving Tuesday is celebrated by non-profit organizations across the country, including UNICEF, the American Humane Society, and more. Giving Tuesday was introduced three years ago, but has quickly gained ground as a major day of asking for donations. Many businesses, like Microsoft, PayPal, and ToysRUs, have partnered with non-profit organizations, giving a portion of their profits from Dec. 2 to the partnering non-profit.
In addition to donating to outside philanthropies, Neff encouraged the community to donate to OCU Benevolence Fund, which has been formed to help members of the campus through difficult financial times.
The fund works as an emergency scholarship fund that can quickly be drawn upon for students in need. In 2009, faculty and staff members donated over $75,000 to the fund in light of the recent recession, so students who had difficulties paying tuition would not have to leave OCU. Since then, many faculty, staff, alumni and community members contribute to the fund annually.
Anyone interested in donating to the fund can make arrangements through Rita Himes, administrative assistant with Church Relations, at 405-208-5060. There is also an option for recurring donations.
