Men’s wrestling junior Zach Skates took the 157-pound King Open championship Sunday at the King student center.
Skates captured his fifth open tournament title in three years with OCU, ranked 12th in NAIA wrestling. Ten Stars placed in the tournament.
Senior Aaron LaFarge finished as runner-up at 125 pounds, while sophomore Derek Sivertsen took second place at 184. Senior Jared Bass at 174 and sophomore Adrian Gaines at 125 took third at their weights, while junior Jacob King was fourth at 184 for Oklahoma City.
Sophomore Ricky McCarty at 165 and junior Jamie Shawver at 174 each grabbed fifth, and sophomore James Landoll at 141 and freshman Aaron Guery at 157 each were sixth.
In the 157-pound final, Skates edged Newberry College’s Dennis Flores 3-2. Skates advanced to the championship match with an 8-1 win over Newberry College’s Chad Wood.
LaFarge made the 125-pound final by pinning Josh Epperson in 2:36. In the championship bout, LaFarge lost to Newberry College’s Trung Duong 9-3.
Sivertsen won by fall over Belmont Abbey College’s Gerry Vassil in 4:03. Jared Holliday knocked off Sivertsen 5-0 in the 184-pound championship.
The Stars face Lindenwood University at 4 p.m. Dec. 4 at Abe Lemons Arena.
