The Stars beat the University of Central Oklahoma 109-97 Saturday at Hamilton Field House.
The Stars had four players score double digits, three scoring more than 20. Senior Tharone Chilton led all scorers with 24 points. OCU went to 3-2 in men’s basketball.
The Stars started the game 6-0 before UCO opened up a 17-2 run with 15:11 to play in the first half. Senior R.J. McGhee sank a 3-pointer to stall the run.
Both teams shot more than 55 percent from the field in the first half. The Stars shot 55.2 percent, while OCU shot 60.7 percent on field goals. Both teams also shot 46 percent from the 3-point line.
UCO took a 10 point lead, 60-50, by the end of the first half.
UCO’s Mahlon Jones scored on their first possession of the second half to open their largest lead of the game.
The Stars fought back and tied the game on two free throws from senior Ivan Jelencic with 5:56 to go. OCU had a run of their own, going on an 11-1 scoring advantage after the game was tied.
Sophomore Dorion Gigger made a layup with 1:59 left to play to open a 12-point lead, the largest advantage for the Stars.
The Stars held UCO to 33.3 percent field goal shooting in the second half, including 12.5 percent from deep. The Stars shot 60.6 percent from the field in the second half, with 50 percent from the 3-point line.
McGhee scored 22 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished three assists for the Stars. Senior Gary Ingett completed his third double-double of the year with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
The Stars start Sooner Athletic Conference play against Texas Wesleyan University at 8 p.m. Dec. 4 in Fort Worth, Texas.
