The men’s basketball team lost their first game of the year 84-65 to the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, Saturday at Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center.
Senior Forward Gary Inglett led the way for the Stars with 20 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and four steals. The Stars went to 2-1 in men’s basketball.
Senior Forward Ivan Jelencic scored in the paint for the Stars to tie the game at six, the last tie of the game.
Points were at a premium for the Stars in the first half. The Stars had 10 points for nearly five and a half minutes before senior Forward R.J. McGhee scored in the paint to add to the board. OCU trailed 43-19 at half.
“You can’t dig yourself in a hole that deep while on the road and expect to win,” OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. “We have to put two halves together if we want to put ourselves in position for success.”
The Stars fought back in the second half and outscored St. Thomas 46-41 in the second period. McGhee, ranked second in the NAIA in scoring, entered the game, averaging 28.5 points a game.
McGhee scored 15 points and provided four assists against St. Thomas.
OCU scored six points in the paint to outscore St. Thomas by two in the category.
The Stars host Langston University 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
