University of North Texas beat the Stars 106-100 Monday at the Super Pit in a men’s basketball exhibition.
Senior Guard Tharone Chilton provided 24 points, six rebounds, five assits and three steals. North Texas’ senior Guard Jordan Williams led with 27 points.
Chilton canned a three-pointer that put the Stars in front 71-61 with 11:19 remaining in the second half. North Texas rallied to tie the game 73-73 with their junior Guard Todd Eaglin’s free throws with 8:07 left.
The Stars held off North Texas to create an 86-77 advantage on junior Guard Jamil Donovan’s free throws with 2:40 left. North Texas stormed back as their senior Forward Armani Flannagan’s layup gave them an 88-87 lead at the 1:04 mark.
Chilton’s free throw gave the Stars a score of 90-88 with 14 seconds to go, but Flannagan struck for a putback of his own, tying the game 90-90 with two seconds remaining. The game went into overtime.
In the extra period, North Texas seized the lead with a 9-2 run to start the overtime. North Texas’ freshman Forward Jeremy Combs scored the first points in overtime, and freshman Guard Greg White-Pittman’s free throw gave them a 103-94 lead with 27 seconds showing.
Junior Guard Evan White sank a three-pointer that cut OCU’s deficit 104-100 with five seconds left, but Williams tacked on free throws to help clinch the victory for North Texas.
Senior Forward R.J. McGhee added 17 points and two steals, while senior Forward Ivan Jelencic picked up 15 points and nine rebounds for the Stars.
The Stars hit 36 of 47 free throws to outscore North Texas by four from the foul line.
OCU returns to regular-season play with a contest 2 p.m. Saturday against the University of St. Thomas in Houston.
