Five student members of the OCU Honors Program and three faculty represented Oklahoma City University in Denver over the weekend at the annual National Collegiate Honors Council Conference.
The NCHC is the national professional association of undergraduate honors programs and colleges, dedicated to providing support collegiate honors programs and expanding these programs on campuses across the nation.
Eric Odum, accounting sophomore, presented a poster titled “The Rhetoric of Recovery: Narcotics Anonymous Key Chains on the Oklahoma City National Memorial Fence.” He completed this project during his semester in the Honors Composition I course.
Audrey Harris, biology sophomore presented her poem “A Study in Loss” as part of the Poetry Master Class Showcase.
Dr. Brooke Hessler, English professor, joined three students in a presentation titled “We are the Stories We Share: Creating Points of Contact Between First-Year and Final-Year Honors Students.” She was joined by Colin Ferguson, philosophy/English senior, Lauren Branum, biochemistry sophomore, and Sarah Wasikowski, religion sophomore. The presentation was based on an in-class experience from fall 2013 which paired Dr. Hessler’s Honors Liberal Arts Seminar and Dr. Tracy Floreani’s Honors Junior/Senior Seminar on the life and work of Ralph Ellison.
Honors Program director Dr. Karen Youmans, who stepped into her position this year, spoke on a panel of administrators during a presentation titled “Beyond the Classroom: Building Community in Honors.”
Dr. Marc DiPaolo, Honors program assistant director, participated in the NCHC Publications Board meeting.
The students and faculty returned home on Monday, Nov. 10.
