- Although Hello World :) clocks in at 21 minutes, it feels like directors Rafaël Mathé and Etienne Larragueta tried to cram too much into too short a film. Each individual component of the cyberhacker piece is interesting and incredibly detailed, but when combined, we never get to a chance to fully engage with any of them. The result is a clustered mess of wasted potential. However, the visual style and intense pacing keep the short from becoming totally unwatchable. To see the film, click here.
- Nathan Campbell’s two-minute Aqua Profunda is a classic case of style over substance. While it obviously follows a young boy and his fear of water and change, any meaning beyond that is indiscernible. There seems to be a story that no one bothered to fill the audience in on beforehand, making it feel like an inside joke we’re not allowed to understand. Find the short here.
- !!RENEGADE!!, about an underwear-clad action hero on a quest to save his abducted wife, is a five-year-old’s play session come to life – in the best possible way. The four-minute film from Michael Cavanaugh and Kevin Van Witt hurtles forth from scene to scene, never resting in one place and somehow topping itself at every turn. It raises many questions but answers absolutely none of them (unless you’re asking whether or not someone’s going to get punched in the face, in which case the answer is always, “Absolutely”). It’s riotously funny, and most of all, it’s just plain fun. Watch it here.
