- The nonprofit behind the New York Film Festival, the Film Society of Lincoln Center, will honor Robert Redford with its 42nd annual Chaplin Award. Redford will be lauded for his acting, his directing, his work on Broadway, and his support of independent film through his founding of the Sundance Institute and its associated film festival. He joins a list of honorees that includes Charlie Chaplin, Elizabeth Taylor, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, Catherine Deneuve, Barbra Streisand and Rob Reiner. For more information, click here.
- The 51st Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival in Turkey had a surprisingly smooth opening this weekend, despite the nation’s charged political atmosphere. The Turkish government’s refusal intervene in the conflict with ISIS over the predominantly Kurdish Syrian city of Kobani has given rise to anti-government protests and instances of violence which caused more than thirty deaths. “The art of cinema has healing powers that we need more than ever today,” said Antalya mayor Menderes Türel at the festival’s opening ceremony on Friday. “That is why we believe we needed to raise the curtain.” To read more on the festival, click here.
- Multichannel YouTube network Maker Studios, a new Mouse House acquisition, is joining forces with the Disney Channel and Disney XD to produce TV specials featuring online talent. The first Maker presentation will be a Halloween-themed program airing as part of the annual “Monstober” event and will feature two 11-minute episodes that highlight Halloween content from the Maker network, along with original content from Maker produced for Disney.
