- Although Finnish filmmaker Mikko Löppönen’s nine-minute short L4ST doesn’t have much in the way of dialogue or plot or character development, it is an incredible atmospheric thrill ride. Based loosely on video game The Last of Us, the film follows two survivors trying to live through a zombie apocalypse. The short’s biggest strength is its fight sequences, which are both shockingly brutal and beautifully stylized. Take a look at the film here.
- Despite having a few rough edges, Game Night, an eight-minute film written and directed by and starring Noah Blodgett and Jacob LaMountain, is a charming little curiosity piece. The short follows two young men who meet up in an RV in the woods to play a series of games, the rules of which are unbeknownst to us. It’s impressive in its earnest simplicity, and although the two young filmmakers have much to learn, they could certainly do worse with such a meager budget. Find the film here.
- James Cooper manages to craft an interesting concept in his ten-minute Interview with a Time Traveler, but it unfortunately never realizes its potential. The titular time traveler is an unconvincing Agent Smith knockoff who simply seems too removed from humanity to be sympathetic. However, Cooper makes clever use of almost claustrophobic filming, amping up the tension and keeping the short engaging. Check it out here.
