The men’s basketball team has been projected to finish fourth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference, whose season begins Oct. 31.
The rankings are determined by the league’s ten coaches, who survey game results and team analytics to determine the ranks. The Stars team has a notable history within the conference. The Stars went 16-12 and reached 17th in the NAIA Division 1 rankings last season. The team has won 12 SAC regular-season crowns and nine tournament titles.
St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Okla., is the favorite to win the SAC title by the league’s 10 coaches. The Cavs, who finished last season with a 24-10 mark and made an appearance in the NAIA Fab Four, were voted first on five of 10 ballots to finish with 91 points.
Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas, was a close second, finishing with two first-place votes and 77 points, just ahead of last year’s SAC Tournament winner Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla., who placed third with 75.
The stars placed fourth with 73 points.
Defending league regular-season champion, Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas, finished in a two-way tie for fifth with Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City, Okla., at 69 points.
Texas Wesleyan University in Ft. Worth, Texas, came in seventh with 49 points, John Brown University in Siloem Springs, Arkansas, came in eighth with 46 points, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha, Okla., came in ninth with 30 points, and Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, Okla., finished in 10th with 22 points.
The basketball season begins Oct.31, and the SAC teams will use a double round-robin scheduling model, in which each team plays a home and an away game against each of the other teams. League teams will compete for two automatic national-tournament bids.
