Out of the Box season begins this weekend with a story about love and hate.
Out of the Box is a student-run organization that allows students the opportunity to direct and produce their own plays. This is the first year Out of the Box is recognized as an organization on campus by the Student Government Organization.
The purpose of the Out of the Box shows is to take away the skeptical and get the truth out, acting senior, Lauriana Williams said.
The first show this semester is “Stop Kiss” written by Diana Son and directed by Samantha Reser, theater for young audiences junior. The show premiers this weekend and is sending a message about the LGBTQ community and the unfair bashings they are still receiving. Reser wants people to understand what the LGBTQ community goes through.
The next two shows will be:
- This is Our Youth written by Kenneth Lonergan and directed by JD Wigham, Nov. 7-8.
- Constellations written by Nick Payne and directed by Nick Jemenez, Dec. 12-13.
All of the performances are on the fourth floor of the Clara E. Jones Administration Building on Fridays and Saturdays 10:30 p.m. to midnight. There is no cost.
Each show only has four weeks of rehearsal time, so they have to act professional in order to get it done.
“Out of the Box is completely raw,” Williams said. “It’s the heart of the people that want to make art.”
Out of the Box accepts submissions from any student with any major, and any student is able to audition at the beginning of each semester. If any student is interested in submitting a play or auditioning, they can email Williams at lcwilliams@my.okcu.edu.
