Several schools on campus will host open houses Thursday, Oct.9 for prospective student.
Kramer School of Nursing, Meinders School of Business and the School of Graduate Studies will host open houses with faculty and admissions staff in attendance.
The events are open to any prospective students, including first year and transfer students, and their families.
Chuck Flint, assistant director of undergraduate admissions, said the events are designed to draw prospective students in for a deeper view of life within the schools.
“It’s really about getting any prospective students on campus so that they can meet with everyone in the school in the same place, view the facilities and get a good feel for what life within that major is like,” Flint said.
The School of Graduate Studies also will host an event Thursday, in a format geared to fit the diversity of the majors which the graduate program offers. Current undergraduate students are encouraged to attend.
The open house will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Meinders School of Business.
The open house will have representatives from all 25 graduate majors available to speak with students one-on-one about their programs.
The event will allow prospective grad students to come and go as they please, with a more relaxed atmosphere.
Nicola Manos, graduate admissions specialist, said the atmosphere will benefit prospective students.
“I hope that the event is informal, but incredibly informative,” Manos said. “We hope prospective students leave with a deep understanding of what their graduate program is about, and, hopefully, decide to attend OCU.”
Current students and other members of the community are invited to attend the open house.
“We are really trying to keep a pulse on what the community and prospective students want in graduate programs,” Manos said. “We are adding programs all the time, and the open house is a great way to inform prospective students of all we offer.”
Prospective students can register for the event at okcugrad.askadmissions.net, or by contacting Nicola Manos at (405)208-5054 or gadmissions@okcu.edu.
Two undergraduate schools will also host open houses on Thursday. These open houses will feature overviews of the programs offered, and presentations by the faculty and staff. Administrative and financial aid specialists will be present to answer questions.
Kramer School of Nursing will host their open house from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the school’s East Building. The event will include a tour of the state-of-the-art teaching facilities.
Students can register online on the admissions page or contact Seyi Adeoye at (405) 208-5050 or email admissions@okcu.edu.
Meinders School of Business will host its open house from 5:30 to 7 p.m. During this presentation, representatives from the admissions department will announce an addition to the Meinders scholarship program.
The scholarship guarantees that any student transferring from the Oklahoma City Community College or Rose State University to the Meinders School of Business will receive up to $10,000 in scholarship funding. The scholarship can be used in addition to the other scholarships a transfer student earns.
Previously, the scholarship was offered only to students transferring from OCCC.
The scholarship is an exciting new element for the admissions office, Flint said.
“We hope to draw in every transfer student who’s expressed an interest, so they can see our facility and our faculty,” Flint said. “The scholarship provides an amazing amount of financial aid. It’s really great.”
Interested participants can register for the event on the admissions page, or contact Amy McQuade at (405) 208-5050 or email admissions@okcu.edu.
Brady Bieber, business finance senior, said the open houses are beneficial to new students.
“It gives them a view of what the school and the faculty are all about,” Bieber said.
