Student Government Association has decided to go through its own process of prioritization. SGA will begin the process of a self-audit soon.
Prioritization is a process in which the budgets for all academic and extra-curricular programs across campus are evaluated. This process provides a strategic and systematic way to reevaluate budgets that can be increased or decreased, according to university officials.
Officials announced the process to the campus community in March 2014.
The SGA audit will look at where and how SGA spends its money and what process they use to spend that money. The audit will help SGA officers decide if the process they use works or not. The last audit for SGA was in Fall 2011 and received a good rating from the appropriations chairman at that time, Anthony England.
“I hope students see that we are trying to responsible with our money,” said Terrance Craft, SGA vice president. “We don’t just write up a purchase order for something and one of us just signs off on it. We actually have a process that helps us decide how to spend the money.”
The audit committee was appointed two weeks ago by SGA. The official results are to be presented to the executive board in December.
“It’s four months of going through a lot of paperwork,” Craft said. “I am anxious to see the results.”
SGA spends its money on events such as Midnight Breakfast during midterm week and Big Event at the end of the year. Last year’s budget for Big Event was $24,000. This year the budget was cut to $15,000.
“It is good for students to see where our student government is putting their money toward,” said Danielle Petersen, music theater junior. “The events are fun and all, but what else are they doing for us.”
