An active shooter drill happened at 10 a.m. Sept. 18 on campus. The drill lasted about 10 minutes. The drill was organized by the OCU police department.
“I believe it went well,” said Bradd Brown, chief of OCU police. “Of course there is always room for improvement. Right now we are going over everything and will be making decisions on what to improve on.”
OCU is required by federal regulations to have at least one dorm evacuation and at least one other drill on campus. Of course, many different situations can occur if the real thing were to happen, Brown said.
Any harmful situation, such as an active shooter or the Oklahoma City Police looking for an armed suspect near campus, could result in a lockdown.
“We do these to make sure that everyone knows what they need to do and how they need to respond,” Brown said. “If there is something or someone on campus that could harm us, we need to be prepared.”
Lee Brown, risk manager for the OCU PD, was unable to comment when contacted by Student Publications.
“It’s a good idea to have these drills,” said Courtney Beyer, acting sophomore. “Everyone should know what to do but that being said we don’t always know what is going to happen if really did happen.”
