- If you don’t mind a bit of obtuse surrealism, check out This is Not a Time to Lie, a three-minute animated short from China’s Lei Lei that follows its main character on a trippy journey through a lush geometric landscape. None of it, from the poetic narration to the almost frantic animation, has a discernible point, but it’s certainly beautiful to listen to and look at. The film also features a lovely score that lends itself quite well to the abstract sharpness of the visuals. The short can be found here.
- Continuing with the abstract theme, Haruki Kawanaka’s animated short float is three minutes of a piece of paper flying around and turning into various other flying things. It’s not the most compelling subject in the world, but Kawanaka somehow makes it fascinating, like the world’s most elaborate screensaver. The groovy electronic score doesn’t hurt, either. Take a look at the film here.
- For something just as frivolous but a whole lot more fun, take a look at Corridor Digital’s Superman with a GoPro. The three-minute short follows Superman as he straps a GoPro to his forehead and goes about his super business. The first-person visuals are skillfully done, and though the whole thing isn’t exactly fraught with meaning, it’s an absolute blast. See it here.
