Open Streets OKC, a celebration of active transportation, will close off a section of NW 23rd St. this Sunday.
The event will take place between noon and 4 p.m., on NW 23rd Street between Robinson and Western.
Open Streets OKC is described as “an opportunity to experience a new use of public space: a temporary reclamation of our streets for non-motorized activity.” It was organized by the Oklahoma City-County Health Department’s Wellness Now Coalition, a group with a mission of promoting active transportation, environmental sustainability, community engagement, and healthy lifestyles.
All members of the Oklahoma City community are invited to use the route to bike, walk, jog and run. The event will also host over 75 organizations and businesses, who will have booths advocating health, wellness, and community involvement. The booths will line 23rd Street.
Activities include a bicycle-powered blender, CPR instruction, karaoke, children’s activities, and various relaxation and wellness clinics.
The OKCU Alumni Organization is hosting a booth providing information for alumni connection. The booth will also feature a family game center.
Food trucks providing healthy options will also line the route. Many of the food trucks belong to business along 23rd Street.
The NW 23rd Street location was chosen for several reasons, including the recent revival of the district by the Uptown 23rd Merchants Association, which has encouraged economic growth and community involvement.
The street also sits in the middle of an area of historic neighborhoods, bringing a residential feel to the event. Finally, organizers hope that attendees will realize the plentiful amount of parks and community activities available in the immediate area, and take advantage of the activities the district has to offer.
Businesses along 23rd Street will remain open during the event.
