For something that is at once charmingly fantastical and deeply relatable, check out I Am Tom Moody, a seven-minute animated short from Ainslie Henderson. The film follows a young amateur entertainer struggling with the conflicting voices in his head, one plagued by insecurity and the other aggressively negative. If you’re fond of documentary shorts, try Vance Malone’s The Poodle Trainer. The seven-minute film follows Irina Markova, a world-class poodle trainer who travels the United States with her pack of talented pooches. Malone manages to pack a great deal of emotional variety into the short, showing us all of Markova’s personality in a few brief moments. What’s more, the score is a gem, providing the perfect auditory backdrop for the story at hand. The film can be found here.
Those who enjoy their science fiction with a side of surrealism will love Val Keller’s After Thought, a seven-minute film that tells the tale of a man who receives the bill for his own funeral.
