For something that’s a little silly but is nonetheless entertaining, take a look at The Wolf of Valentine’s Day, a three-minute parody short from Nathan Moore that sends up Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street by placing it in the dog-eat-dog world of chocolates and greeting cards. It’s in trailer format, giving Moore the opportunity to hit all the best bits of Wolf – and keeping the film’s length to a minimum, which keeps the comedy from becoming stale. The short can be found here.
Those looking for something darker will enjoy Mighty Antlers, Sune Reindhart’s four-minute animated film that tells the tale of a driver who hits a deer and suffers brutal consequences. The combination of CGI and hand-drawn imagery is stunningly unique, creating visuals that are at once beautiful and grotesque. What’s more, Reindhart’s sense of pacing is superb, making for an intensely enthralling short. Take a look at the film here.
If it’s something lighter you’re after, try El Vendedor de Humo (“The Smoke Seller”), a six-minute piece of animation from the minds of Jaime Maestro and students from Spain’s Primerframe Academy. The short tells the tale of a young traveling trickster who uses his ability to transform objects to swindle a group of unsuspecting townspeople. The animation is delightful, and the story has quite a twist ending. Find the film here.
Also wonderful – but with darker themes – is Argentinian animation/effects studio 3DAR’s Shave It. A four-minute film, it follows a particularly brilliant monkey as he removes his fur, dons a suit, and wages war upon the people who have destroyed his habitat. The visuals are striking, and the payoff is utterly satisfying, making for a short but sweet cinematic experience. See the short here.
