Lee Hall, former director for first year experience, is the new disability services director.
The disability services director assists students with learning limitations by providing accommodation letters to professors. The director also gives injured students access to golf cart transportation across campus.
Brenda Johnston, the previous campus health and disability services director, resigned Jan. 24. The disability services portion of her position moved from student affairs to academic affairs.
Student affairs will hire a new director of health services to replace Johnston.
Despite the changes, the student disability coordination will run much like it has in the past. The disability services number has not changed, but students will need to contact Hall through email.
OCU administrators decided on the change after several meetings.
“Because our faculty are so intimately involved with the students and helping them find academic success, the decision was made to move the disability services piece to academic affairs,” Hall said. “This will make the faculty more involved in how the whole process works.”
The new position fits well with her duties as the first year experience director, Hall said.
“The bulk of the work that is done for disability services is done when the freshmen come in as new students, so it does go together perfectly,” Hall said.
Hall said she always is open to student comments and suggestions regarding the change.
“We want to provide the best possible service to our students, and I’m looking forward to getting to visit with them and see what they might suggest for the future,” Hall said.
Polley Cooney, acting senior, said she is relieved that the process has not significantly changed.
“The accommodation process has always run smoothly,” Cooney said. “I am glad to know there won’t be any huge differences.”
