The Directors Guild gave this year’s top prize to Alfonso Cuaron for his sci-fi thriller Gravity. The award was presented at the organization’s 66th DGA Awards ceremony at the Century Plaza Hotel on Saturday. “This is truly an honor and I’m humbled by it,” Cuaron said in his acceptance speech. “I still have this teen crush on other directors.” To read more on the awards, click here.
Weekend at Bernie’s director Ted Kotcheff and writer Robert Kane have filed suit against Fox and MGM, alleging “breach of contract, breach of covenant and implied faith, improper accounting and violations of the California business and professional code.” The plaintiffs assert that they had been deprived of “at least hundreds of millions of dollars” of profit from their 1989 film. Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash took home both the grand jury prize and audience award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The film’s triumph marks the second year in a row that the same film won the top two prizes. The movie has been acquired for distribution by Sony Pictures Classics. 21st Century Fox is set to acquire a majority stake in the Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network (YES), which delivers exclusive live local coverage of New York Yankees baseball and Brooklyn Nets basketball, along with other local and national sports programming. “Our investment in the YES Network underscores our commitment to growing our global sports portfolio with offerings that are exceptional and unique,” said James Murdoch, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, 21st Century Fox, in a prepared statement.
