The book discussion series Let’s Talk About It returned Tuesday with a discussions focusing on Muslim stories in America.
The discussion Tuesday was themed Muslim Journeys: American Stories, and focused on the life of Abd al-Rahman Ibrahima. Ibrahima was one of thousands of West African Muslims who lived in slavery in antebellum America.
The biography, “Prince Among Slaves”, relays the story of how Ibrahima, an educated and aristocratic man, rose to leadership despite his situation.
Each session in the five-part series focuses on a different book in discussion.
A humanities scholar leads each discussion, and participants have the opportunity to share ideas and thoughts in a small group.
The upcoming dates, themes and books featured are:
Jan. 28, “The Columbia Sourcebook of Muslims in the United States” edited by Edward E. Curtis.
Feb. 11, “Acts of Faith” by Eboo Patel.
Feb. 25, “Quiet Revolution” by Leia Ahmed.
March 11, “The Butterfly Mosque” by G. Willow Wilson.
Those interested in participating are encouraged to preregister and read the selections before the event.
