Student Government Association hosted a tailgate party Nov. 6 in the caf.
The event was the second tailgating event hosted by SGA this year. The first was for a soccer game.
Student Activities Committee handed out raffle tickets at the party for a chance to win Thunder tickets for those who attended the OCU men’s basketball game against Langston.
Organizations could swipe in at the gymnasium during the Langston game to earn points toward allotments.
SGA hosted the party to support the men’s basketball team in hopes of boosting attendance at the game.
“The great thing that I noticed, at least about the first tailgating event, was a lot of support from athletes for athletes, and then there was members of Greek life that were in groups supporting,” said SGA President Beatrize Martinez.
SGA will start a tailgating committee with a separate budget for these events. They plan to host another tailgating event during winter break.
“We would definitely love to hear if someone has better suggestions on how to host them,” Martinez said.
Many students who do not regularly eat in the caf were unaware of the event.
“I think we really could have advertised a little bit better, and gotten the word out a little bit more, and there would have been more interest,” said Ken Williams, freshman SAC member. “But I don’t think it hurt attendance.”
SGA hopes to host events for each sport.
“It’s a really good idea, and if taken in the right direction, it could be really successful in getting students here more interested in getting involved in on-campus activities,” Williams said.
Students who wish to submit tailgating suggestions should send an email to ocusga@my.okcu.com.
