The volleyball team wrapped up their regular season and is preparing for the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament set to begin Friday.
The Stars finished the 2013 season with an 18-13 record, an improvement from last season’s 15-22.
“We had a lot of ups and downs during our season,” said Senior Middle Blocker Torrie Flynn. “There were some moments of absolute greatness, when everyone was on top of their game and we would play awesome.
“I wish we could’ve sustained that all the time, but I’m proud of how my girls competed this year.”
The Stars have been practicing blocking and offensive drills for the past two weeks.
“Honestly, it wasn’t easy to bring to the same intensity every day,” said Senior Libero Anna Gentry. “Volleyball is very much a mental sport.
“I think since last week against John Brown University, we’ve shown that we can come out with a lot of intensity and a sense of urgency.”
Coach Nikki Dieball made some position changes in the lineup.
Sophomore and former Setter Hannah Mitcham was moved to defense, while Senior and former Libero Danielle Robison was switched to Setter.
The Stars hope the adjustments will benefit the team during the first conference tournament game.
“We made those switches because we felt like we weren’t able to connect very well with our hitters at the time,” Dieball said. “We needed Danielle’s leadership at that position so that she could be more involved and be a stabilizing component for us.”
Gentry, Flynn and Robison are playing their last career games for the Stars.
“As four-year seniors, Anna, Danielle and myself have gone through so much, and we’ve always wanted to go back to the national tournament, like we did our freshman year,” Flynn said. “It is so unreal that this has come to an end, but we want to go out the right way, and making it to nationals would be huge for us.”
